German Police Can Now Shoot Down Drones

Germany has approved a new law that gives federal police the power to shoot down drones that pose an immediate threat. This legislation aims to improve the country’s security as drone-related disruptions increase across Europe. The law still needs parliamentary approval. Once passed, it will permit authorities to use countermeasures such as lasers, jamming signals, or physical force to neutralize drones in restricted airspace.

Drone sightings over critical infrastructure, such as airports and military sites, have risen sharply in 2025. By the end of September, there were 172 incidents reported, which is a 33% increase from the previous year. These incursions have raised concerns about national security. German officials suspect that Russia might be involved in these threats as part of hybrid warfare tactics.

The new law creates a counter-drone unit within the federal police. This unit will team up with the military to manage smaller drones at low altitudes and larger drones at high altitudes. Germany is also partnering with countries like Israel and Ukraine to improve its counter-drone skills.

While the law aims to improve airspace security, concerns about civilian safety remain, especially in populated areas. Germany’s approach reflects a broader European effort to address the growing risks posed by unauthorized drones.
