DJI Mavic 4 Pro Workshop: Insights and Experience

I recently had the privilege of hosting a DJI Mavic 4 Pro workshop at the DJI Carendale store. The event was a fantastic opportunity to dive into this new drone and explore its capabilities. It was a great chance to connect with attendees, share unique insights, and showcase everything from the drone’s tips and settings to its new features and controller. Let me walk you through what went down at the workshop, what I shared with the participants, and what you can expect from this powerful drone.

Workshop Experience & Overview

The day began with an in-store presentation that lasted around 45 minutes. During the presentation, we covered the specs, settings, battery information, and all the essential details about the Mavic 4 Pro drone and its new controller. After the presentation, we moved to a nearby drone park, where attendees had the chance to fly the drone themselves.

I flew a second drone next to the participants, showcasing key features and settings. Everyone was actively engaged, learning firsthand about the drone’s tracking capabilities, camera systems, and more. We also demonstrated how the drone’s Active Track function works by following the park’s manager as he moved around. It was a great day of flying, learning, and connecting with fellow drone enthusiasts.

The Mavic 4 Pro Triple Camera System

One of the highlights of the Mavic 4 Pro is its triple-camera system, a refinement of the Mavic 3 Pro’s design. It boasts a 6K 60fps camera system with full HDR, which is ideal for cinematic shots. The primary camera uses a micro four-thirds sensor (4/3) and includes an adjustable aperture ranging from f2 to f11. This allows for great flexibility in different lighting conditions. With 16 stops of dynamic range, the drone delivers exceptional image quality.

The system also offers 100 megapixel photos, a huge leap from previous models. The second and third lenses provide zoom options, giving photographers and videographers various creative tools. Whether you’re capturing wide-angle landscapes or focusing on distant subjects, the camera system is versatile and powerful.

4K and 6K Video Capabilities

The Mavic 4 Pro shoots 6K video at 60fps, which is remarkable for a consumer-grade drone. You also get 4K video at 120fps for smooth slow-motion shots. When it comes to photography, the camera produces 100 megapixel photos, ideal for capturing detailed landscapes or aerial shots that need high-resolution clarity.

The lens system remains reliable across all zoom levels, ensuring that each shot is consistent in terms of color and dynamic range. The 70mm medium telephoto lens is especially useful for capturing distant subjects, such as vehicles or wildlife, without disturbing them.

Controller Features

The Mavic 4 Pro comes with a brand-new controller that adds significant value to the overall experience. It features a 7-inch display with 2,000 nits of peak brightness, making it visible even in direct sunlight. The controller has collapsible control sticks, ensuring portability without compromising functionality.

The controller’s ability to rotate the camera up to 400° in manual mode is a game-changer. This feature offers unique perspectives that were previously difficult to achieve without post-production work. Additionally, the controller’s tilt range extends up to 70°, which adds more flexibility when shooting dynamic scenes.

Key Features of the Mavic 4 Pro

The Mavic 4 Pro offers advanced tracking modes, such as Active Track 360, which ensures that the drone can follow moving subjects with ease. Improvements to this feature mean that the drone is better at predicting and following moving objects, even in challenging environments. It’s also great for capturing fast-moving cars or people in action, keeping them centered in the frame.

Another helpful feature is the focus tracking, where the drone automatically adjusts the focus on a subject you select, creating a nice blur effect in the background to enhance the subject’s prominence. This functionality is a real time-saver for creating professional-looking footage without manual adjustments.

Obstacle Avoidance and Sensors

The Mavic 4 Pro has six sensors—three on the bottom, three on top along with a LAR sensor in the front. These sensors help the drone avoid obstacles while tracking and flying. It has a significant advantage in terms of low-light sensing and obstacle avoidance, particularly when navigating complex environments.

The drone can also keep up with moving subjects at speeds of up to 64 km/h, which is a major improvement over earlier models. Whether you’re following a car or a cyclist, the Mavic 4 Pro can adjust its path, ensuring smooth and safe flight, even when there are trees or other obstacles in the way.

Flight Time and Battery Performance

The Mavic 4 Pro’s battery has a 65Wh capacity, offering up to 51 minutes of flight time under ideal conditions. Realistically, you can expect around 45 minutes, depending on your flying style. The battery also supports fast charging, with one battery taking 51 minutes to fully charge and three batteries charging in just 90 minutes. This is a major improvement compared to earlier models like the Mavic 3 Pro.

Quick Shot Mode and Vertical Video

Another fun feature of the Mavic 4 Pro is the Quick Shot Mode, which lets you create cinematic, rotating shots with ease. You can choose from various preset speeds and angles for different types of shots. The vertical video mode, a first for Mavic drones, allows you to shoot in portrait orientation, which is ideal for social media content creation.

New Controller and Charging Hub

The new controller is a standout feature. It’s compatible with other DJI drones, including the Air 3 and Mini 4 Pro. It includes a built-in microphone, which is perfect for capturing audio while flying the drone. Whether you’re narrating a tutorial or capturing a memorable moment, this feature ensures convenience and high-quality sound.

In terms of charging, the Mavic 4 Pro has a significant advantage with its fast-charging capabilities. The drone’s batteries charge quickly, making it more practical for multiple flying sessions during the day. The controller itself is also equipped with a large, high-brightness display that works well in challenging lighting conditions.
