The DJI Neo 2 has quickly captured the attention of drone enthusiasts with its impressive features and compact design. First Impressions of the DJI Neo 2
The DJI Neo 2 builds upon the success of its predecessor, the original Neo, and offers several exciting upgrades. The Neo 2 retains many of the features that made the original so popular, such as a variety of control methods, but it also introduces new enhancements that make it even more impressive.
Camera and Gimbal System
One of the most notable upgrades in the Neo 2 is the new camera system. Unlike the original, which featured a single-axis gimbal, the Neo 2 now comes with a dual-axis gimbal. This allows for better stabilization and smoother footage, especially when capturing 4K video. The camera is equipped with a half-inch CMOS sensor, capable of shooting 12-megapixel stills and recording video in 4K at 60 fps, with an option for 100 fps for slow-motion shots.
The new dual-axis gimbal offers noticeable improvements, but it’s not without its limitations. On windy days, I did notice slight camera movement, particularly when filming directly downward. This is due to the drone’s small, lightweight build, which struggles to maintain stability in high winds. However, the Neo 2 performs far better than the original Neo when it comes to handling wind. With the ability to withstand level-five winds, it can confidently fly over water or in open areas without worrying too much about instability.
Wind Resistance and Durability
In addition to its improved camera system, the Neo 2 boasts enhanced wind resistance, which makes it much more reliable in blustery conditions. During my tests, the drone handled gusts of up to 30 km/h with ease, which was a huge improvement over its predecessor. Despite being loud in windy conditions, the drone remains steady and capable, making it an ideal choice for those who need a compact drone that can handle a variety of outdoor environments.
Omni-Directional Obstacle Avoidance
One of the standout features of the Neo 2 is its omni-directional obstacle avoidance system. This allows the drone to detect and avoid obstacles from all directions, making it safer to fly, especially when in following mode. The system performed well in my tests, including a tracking scenario where the drone easily navigated obstacles while following my movement.
However, there was one minor issue where the drone flew backward and collided with a tree. This could have been due to the new transceiver on the back of the drone, which might have interfered with the obstacle avoidance sensors. Still, this is a minor concern, and the obstacle avoidance system works well overall.

Versatile Control Options
The Neo 2 shines when it comes to control versatility. There are multiple ways to operate the drone, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced drone pilots. You can control it using the standard controller, a motion controller, or even your phone or voice commands. The drone can also be launched with a simple tap of a button, and the hand-launch feature allows for easy takeoff without needing a controller.
Gesture Controls
One of the coolest features of the Neo 2 is its gesture controls, which allow you to control the drone without a controller or phone. By simply holding up your palm, you can launch the drone into following mode and move it in any direction—up, down, left, right, or even closer or farther away. This is particularly useful for capturing footage without needing to land the drone or adjust the controls manually.
The gesture controls worked flawlessly in my tests, allowing for a seamless experience. The palm finding landing feature is another great addition, making it easier to land the drone on your hand without any hassle. The palm recognition system is quick and reliable, providing an intuitive way to control the drone without the need for additional hardware.

Smart Selfie Mode and Improved Storage
Another new feature of the Neo 2 is its smart selfie mode. This allows the drone to automatically capture a series of shots, including wide angle, mid-range, and close up photos, with audible cues and light indicators to inform you of each capture. While this feature might seem like a novelty at first, it’s actually very useful for capturing group photos or selfies with family and friends.
The Neo 2 also boasts improved internal storage, now offering up to 49GB of built-in space. This is a welcome upgrade, as it provides more room for storing your photos and videos without the need for additional memory cards.

While battery life hasn’t seen a massive improvement over the original Neo, it still offers more than enough flight time for most users. The drone’s range is exceptional, and I never experienced any dropouts or connectivity issues during testing. The new transceiver, which comes with the FlyMore Combo, significantly improves the range, allowing for longer flights with fewer interruptions.

When comparing the Neo 2 to the original Neo, there are several key improvements worth noting. The camera system is upgraded to a dual-axis gimbal, offering better stability, and the new omni-directional obstacle avoidance system provides a safer flying experience.
