DJI Neo 2 Tracking Gauntlet Test

If you’ve been wondering how well the DJI Neo 2 handles obstacle avoidance, you’re in the right place. In this article, we’re testing the DJI Neo 2 Tracking Gauntlet Test with an obstacle area. This setup allows us to put the drone through its paces and see just how well it can navigate real-world obstacles while tracking a moving subject. Let’s dive in.

Testing Location and Setup

The location chosen for this test is ideal for assessing the Neo 2’s obstacle avoidance capabilities. Surrounded by trees and varied terrain, this setting provides the perfect environment to challenge the drone’s tracking and navigation. For full transparency, DJI provided the Neo 2 for this test, and this video is sponsored by the D1 Store. A huge thank you to both for the support!

The Neo 2 features a display on the arm, allowing you to easily switch between settings and select how you want the drone to follow. For this test, we’ve set the drone to “Medium Flat” with a medium distance, so it follows at a moderate height and distance. Once set, it’s a simple process to press a button, and the drone immediately takes off to follow you.

The First Test: Following Mode with Obstacle Avoidance

Once the drone is airborne, it begins following. With obstacle avoidance set to “bypass mode” the Neo 2 can maneuver around trees and other obstacles in its path. This means that as I move around the trees, the drone automatically adjusts its flight path to avoid collisions.

As I dart between trees, the drone follows me without issue. Occasionally, it may momentarily lose track of me, but it quickly recovers and continues its mission without a hitch. If I want the drone to land at any point, I simply raise my hand, and the drone will locate my palm and land automatically. This intuitive feature works seamlessly, making the Neo 2 a joy to operate.

Adjusting the Tracking Mode

One of the cool features of the Neo 2 is the ability to adjust how it follows. You can change the angle (low, flat, or high) and the distance (close, medium, or far) simply by pressing the buttons on the arm. You can even adjust the starting position of the drone. For example, I initially had it following from the rear, but now I can set it to follow from the front.

After making these adjustments, the drone quickly takes off and begins tracking me from the front. The change is immediate and smooth, demonstrating just how easy it is to reconfigure the drone without touching a controller or phone. As I walk, the drone follows perfectly, adjusting to changes in direction and terrain as I move between trees.

Testing Its Ability to Keep Up While Jogging

The real test comes when I start jogging. As I pick up the pace and navigate through tight spaces between trees, the Neo 2 keeps up effortlessly. The drone is fast and nimble, managing to dodge trees and obstacles with ease. However, when I change direction abruptly, the drone sometimes loses track and ends up following me from the rear. Nonetheless, the drone quickly readjusts and returns to its intended tracking mode.

Whenever I need the drone to land, I just raise my hand, and it smoothly descends. The whole process is so simple and effective, proving that the Neo 2 can handle dynamic situations without much effort.

Additional Features and Safety Mechanisms

In addition to its impressive tracking capabilities, the Neo 2 is also designed with safety in mind. The sensors do an excellent job of avoiding obstacles, although in one instance, the drone did clip a tree. However, no damage was done thanks to the protective propeller guards, and the drone continued to operate flawlessly.

The ease of adjusting settings without connecting to a controller is another standout feature. The system allows you to put the drone into tracking mode with just a few button presses. This is a huge convenience, as it eliminates the need to fiddle with complex setups.

Exploring Different Tracking Angles

Next, I set the drone to follow from a lower angle and from the front left. The drone adapts quickly to the new setup and continues to follow without issue. As I jog through a forested area, the Neo 2 dodges obstacles like a pro, although it did hit one tree. Nonetheless, the robust design ensures that no damage occurs, and the drone remains fully operational.

When I change direction or speed, the Neo 2 adjusts seamlessly. Its responsiveness is impressive, and the sensors allow it to avoid collisions without hesitation. At any point, if I need the drone to land, I can simply raise my hand, and it will do so automatically.

High Angle Rear Tracking

In the final part of the test, I set the drone to follow from a high angle in rear mode. As I move, the Neo 2 smoothly darts around obstacles, maintaining a safe distance and avoiding trees with ease. This setup is particularly useful in areas with dense trees or narrow gaps, as the sensors on the front ensure the drone can detect and avoid obstacles in its path.

The drone performs admirably, managing to keep up even as I increase my pace. The safety features, including automatic stopping and hovering when it loses track of its target, provide great peace of mind. If it does lose track, the drone simply stops and waits for me to reposition, making it an extremely reliable piece of technology.

Impressive Performance

By the end of the test, the Neo 2 has proven its ability to handle a variety of tracking situations. The obstacle avoidance works incredibly well, with the drone seamlessly adjusting to changing environments and different tracking modes. Although it did hit a tree during one test, the damage was minimal, and the drone’s sturdy build and propeller guards kept it intact.

Overall, the DJI Neo 2 is an impressive drone, combining ease of use, advanced tracking features, and solid obstacle avoidance. Whether you’re filming in dynamic environments or simply need a reliable drone for everyday use, the Neo 2 delivers an exceptional experience.
